In September 2025, the Joint Commission and the Coalition for Health AI released the first national guidance on the responsible use of AI in healthcare. It is voluntary today — but the Joint Commission accredits the majority of U.S. hospitals, and RUAIH is the explicit foundation for the playbooks and certification programs the two organizations are rolling out through 2026. When AI expectations reach your survey, they will look like RUAIH.
The guidance puts accountability squarely on the healthcare organization, not the vendor: AI policies and governance structures, patient transparency, data use protections, local validation and ongoing quality monitoring, safety-event reporting, risk and bias assessment, and workforce education. Most health systems can point to activity in two or three of these areas. Very few can produce evidence across all seven.
An independent readiness assessment gives you that evidence — not a self-attestation, not a vendor checklist, but a structured analysis of where your AI program stands against each RUAIH element, what's missing, and what to fix first. How the RUAIH readiness assessment works
Discovery (Week 1)
Stakeholder interviews with your AI governance lead, CMIO, compliance officer, patient safety and quality leaders, and procurement. Inventory of AI tools in clinical, administrative, and operational use — including ambient documentation, imaging, decision support, scheduling, and revenue cycle. Document review: governance charters, AI policies, vendor contracts and data use agreements, validation reports, incident logs, patient consent materials, and training records.
Gap Analysis & Prioritization (Week 4)
Quantified readiness score by element and overall. Gap register ranked by patient-impact severity, survey visibility, and implementation effort. Because RUAIH overlaps heavily with ONC HTI-1, NIST AI RMF, and Section 1557, our cross-framework mapping identifies the controls that close RUAIH gaps and satisfy your other obligations at the same time — so remediation effort lands where it has the highest leverage.
Current State Assessment (Weeks 2–3)
Structured evaluation against the seven RUAIH elements — AI Policies & Governance Structures, Patient Privacy & Transparency, Data Security & Data Use Protections, Ongoing Quality Monitoring, Voluntary Reporting of AI Safety Events, Risk & Bias Assessment, and Education & Training — decomposed into discrete, auditable controls.
